Aylin Uyumus is a standout student at UIBS who is already making her mark on the global stage. While completing her studies, she has built an impressive international profile, gaining hands-on experience with world-renowned premium brands such as BMW, Porsche and KARL STORZ.

With a strong grounding in global economics and international business, Aylin navigates high-stakes, male-dominated industries with confidence and purpose, cultivating relationships with senior leaders across Europe. In this interview, she reflects on how her ongoing education at UIBS is shaping her professional mindset, the lessons she has already gathered from the automotive world, and the advice she has for her fellow students.

  • Looking back on your studies, which specific skills or experiences have had the most lasting impact on your professional development, and how do you apply them in your current doctoral research and day-to-day work?

Studying global economics gave me a strong foundation in understanding political systems and international economic dynamics. This perspective continues to shape how I analyze business environments and make informed decisions in my day-to-day work.

  • You gained early experience with globally recognized brands like BMW and Porsche. What were the most valuable lessons from those roles, and how did they influence your transition into your current position?

Working in a traditionally male-dominated field as a woman was a unique and empowering experience. Building connections with senior leaders, including VPs and board members, helped me recognize my own value and grow professionally. Additionally, working with premium global brands taught me the importance of attention to detail and a high level of sensitivity in customer interaction, which I carry into my current role.

  • In an era defined by rapid change and constant innovation, how do you view the balance between academic knowledge and practical, hands-on learning?

I strongly believe that integrating practical semesters into academic studies is highly beneficial. It allows students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings and better prepare for the demands of the professional world.

  • For students just beginning their journey at UIBS, what mindset or approach would you recommend to make the most of both their academic experience and future career opportunities?

I would recommend using your free time proactively for personal and professional development. Get involved in accreditation programs, contribute to the university community, and represent the university as an ambassador. These experiences can open doors and build valuable skills beyond the classroom.

  • On a more personal note, what do you miss most, whether from the classroom experience or the connections you built with your peers?

I especially miss the beautiful location in the heart of Barcelona, as well as the flexibility in choosing my timetable. Most importantly, I value the strong connections I built with fellow students and professors, which made the experience truly memorable.
